Cheers fellow Matampers!
I recieve my GT1 yesterday. With shaken hands I opened the box and revealed the VOID. I was pleased with the look of it. Very impressive. Well, the faceplate wasn't installed as well as it should be. The holes in the faceplate weren't in the same place as in the amp, causing the faceplate to bend and almost crack near the holes. I assume that I will get a new faceplate without the holes and then I'll drill the holes exactly to right places. This is just cosmetic stuff and easy to fix. It's not bad, but ain't perfect and this amp deserves to be perfect. So next thing was to get it to the rehearsal space and try it out.
I have dreamed about Matamp for various years now. Even before I bought my last amp Laney GH100L in 2006. Back then I didn't have the money or the guts to buy a Matamp. After last recording sessions I somehow got enough of Laney and decided that it was time to get the GT1.
As I was used to play with the Laney, I found myself trying to get same kind of sound out of GT1 by molesting the preamp. It led to nowhere except a huge amount of noise. Well this amp has guts at least. After accepting that it's not the same amp and will not submit, I took a break and approached from a new perspective. Then I started to find the sounds and characteristic stuff from it. Since I used only the amps preamp gain with the Laney, I don't have so much stomp boxes for the crushing stone wall type of sound like big muff or something. Yet there was a friend's big muff lying in the floor. I plugged it in and it sounded better. I used the gto mode and I think that it has a lot of potential for the sound searching in the future. I didn't have enough time to explore the amp and I know that I have only scratch the surfice.
What I was amazed about, was the clarity and how much my not-so-good touch of guitar had effect. I have to learn how to play guitar again. Yet this is a only good thing. Mostly I play rhtym stuff and then some psychedlic noise feedback. My first thing is to do is to get my main sound together. I like this YOB kind of crushing dark growl wall. I liked the Slomatics sound as well. So that kind of sound I have in my mind. So I think that I must explore some fuzz pedals. I have a custom made Rat clone, but I didn't find the sound yet. Works great with wah though. I got some fuzz pedal also, but the exploring is still to be done. I will get some pedals to test from my friends. And eventually will get some clones built for me, only thing is that which ones. Maybe a new fuzz and overdrive.
Anyway, there some exploring to do, which is nice. And some attention to my playing touch, which is not so gentle. As I press the strings so hard, the chords gets detuned and it really stands out with Matamp.
So any tips and stuff are welcome. And if some has a intrest, check out the band I'm playing in and you get the idea what I'm working with. There is a couple of songs for download.
I got more time to explore today and better vision to approach the VOID. I have to take a picture as well. I'll report as I get more exploring to do.
