GT1 making crazy screaching noises...!! |
Lead | |
|
So...to my dismay, I'm having some sort of issue with my GT1. It sporadically makes super loud, crazy screaching noises that last only a few (but very
annoying) seconds, followed by a few more seconds of weird humming, and then it's back to normal. It does this even in standby mode! Very odd, very
disappointing, i have to say. It seems no matter how much money I spend on "top" gear, I'm always plagued with problems! Aarrgghhh!!!!
Any advice/ info on this, anybody???? |

you have to check the valves. pre-amp valves and power tubes!

I guess that is always a slim possibility with any tube amp- however i don't believe this type of noise to be a typical symptom of tube failure. I also
don't believe I've used this thing quite enough to need new tubes just yet. Many may not know this- but pre amp tubes are pretty much meant to last
forever, or at least an extremely long time. When your tone gets shitty and volume sags, then power tubes may be the issue.
but i always use my stand-by and with the fact that i always have the half-power switch engaged (it's STILL loud as hell!), i have a hard time believing that my EL34s would toasted already! but then again... it may just be that after all, who knows?!? i've had many tube amps over the years and have never heard this type of screaching noise from any other amp. that is what has me so puzzled. |

i had to replace a pair of EL34's in my KSM after a year. They made this metallic rattle sound when ever the amp was being pushed hard and i hit a C# note.
I agree, preamp tubes should last a long time, but there are a lot of variables, like how the amp is set up, voltage to the valves etc.. I've had other
issues with my KSM which has led me to replace the preamp valves which in turn opened up a whole new can or worms! different brands sound totally different,
same brand ecc83's have more/less gain than the next one etc.

Yeah, i totally hear you on that. Guess I'll just drop it off to a tech and fork over the ca$h. Bummer. Hopefully its nothing too expensive. If it turns
out to just be the tubes, i'll be happy. But the fact that it makes this crazy noise even in stand-by mode makes me think its some thing else, some weird
electrical issue?? I'm sick of spending/ wasting money on equipment! I'm going all SOLID-STATE!! (just kidding! haha)

my amp made strange noises and buzz after i plugged in a bass guitar into a cranked gt1 and played for about 15minutes.
ive send it to matamp germany and the tech figured out one EL34 was damaged and made the strange noises. ask your tech to check the power tubes. just before the accident, the "damaged" EL34 made some strange noises, when i turned up the amp. but after 5minutes of warming up, it was gone. so the EL34 was at that time not 100% working right, after half a year of use. i also used the half power switch most of the time. i dont understand why the power valves are sometimes are going to die after such a short time. i dont get it. |

Many of the matamps i've seen have Mute switches rather than standby. My amp made the funny noises while the mute switch was on.
JSB, i gigged my KSM every weekend before the problems started, it was in and out of a van more times than i can remember. It never got dropped but it did get a few knocks along the way. Valves are fragile little things. I've put replacement valves in (all brand new, i don't subscribe to this NOS thing!) and some have been worse (noiser, more/less gain, brittle top end etc) than the ones i took out.. Strangely, all the noisey crappy valves i tried in my KSM are now working great in my Twin, weird. |
